Health and Safety Policy for London Landscape Gardeners

Purpose and scope. This health and safety policy sets out the commitments of our team of London Landscape Gardeners and landscape contractors to maintain safe working conditions for staff, clients and the public. It applies to all landscaping operations, routine maintenance, planting and site clearance. The policy aims to embed a risk-aware culture among all London landscaping gardeners and associated workers without focusing on local legal citations, while promoting safe systems of work across every project we undertake.

Responsibilities. Management will provide the leadership, resources and training to ensure that every worker understands their responsibilities. Supervisors and crew leaders must implement safe working practices, oversee risk assessments and ensure that landscape gardeners in London are competent to use tools, operate machinery and apply chemicals safely. Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others and to report hazards promptly.

Risk assessment and planning. Before any job begins a documented risk assessment will be carried out for site conditions, access, underground services, traffic interaction and environmental risks. Plans will include method statements for high-risk tasks such as tree work, deep excavation, use of petrol-powered machinery and handling hazardous substances. Where appropriate, additional controls such as exclusion zones, banksman duties and temporary fencing will be used to protect workers and passers-by.

Control measures and safe systems

Safe plant operation and effective tool management are central to reducing incidents. Key controls include:

• PPE: hard hats, hi-visibility clothing, safety boots, eye and ear protection, gloves and respiratory protection as required.
• Plant checks: daily inspections of mowers, chainsaws, shredders and powered equipment; defects reported and taken out of service until repaired.
• Isolation: lock-off procedures for equipment maintenance and safe energy control during repairs.

Manual handling and ergonomics.

Manual handling training will be provided and tasks will be assessed to minimise lifting risks. Mechanical aids, team-lifting and load reduction strategies will be used wherever possible. All crew members are encouraged to use safe lifting techniques and to raise concerns about repetitive or strenuous tasks.

Chemicals and waste management. Use of pesticides, fertilisers and oils will follow product instructions and be handled only by trained personnel. Spill kits will be available on larger sites, and waste will be segregated for recycling or safe disposal. We will reduce chemical use through good horticultural practice and consider non-chemical alternatives where suitable.

Traffic and public safety. Where work is adjacent to roads, footpaths or busy sites, traffic management plans and pedestrian segregation will be implemented. Cones, signs and temporary barriers will define safe zones. Crews will use high-visibility clothing and radios where necessary to maintain safe coordination with moving vehicles and plant.

Training, competence and supervision. Induction, toolbox talks and periodic refresher courses will keep skills current. Competence records will be maintained for machine operators, chainsaw users and pesticide handlers. Supervisors will monitor performance and provide coaching to maintain safe behaviour.

Incident reporting and emergency response. All incidents, near-misses and unsafe conditions will be reported and investigated to identify root causes and implement preventative actions. Emergency procedures will be in place for first aid, fire and major incidents, with access to a first-aid kit and trained first-aiders on site. Contractor and subcontractor management. All third parties working alongside our gardeners must demonstrate equivalent safety standards and provide evidence of training, insurance and risk controls. Coordination meetings and documented permits to work will ensure that everyone on site understands the shared safety arrangements.

Monitoring, review and continuous improvement. Performance will be monitored through inspections, audits and review of incident data. The policy will be reviewed annually or following significant change or incident.
